About the North Augusta Greeneway Trail
|
The North Augusta Greeneway, known to most citizens as the Greeneway, was named after former Mayor Thomas W. Greene (1985-1997). The Greeneway is a 7+ mile paved recreational trail that follows an abandoned railroad right of way purchased by the city in 1988.

Development of the Greeneway Trail
|
Phase I of the Greeneway, 3.3 miles, travels from the Georgia Avenue Bridge to Martintown Road. Phase II, another 1.5 miles, extends the Greeneway to its current western terminus at Pisgah Road. In 1999, the city constructed Phase III, a pedestrian bridge over Martintown Road connecting Phases I and II. Phase IV, completed in 2000, extended the Greeneway another 0.5 miles east from the Georgia Avenue Bridge to the Clubhouse at the RiverClub Golf Course.
Construction was recently completed on an extension of the Greeneway into the North Augusta riverfront. The 1.5 mile extension forks off the existing trail near Crystal Lake, follows Crystal Creek through the woods to the Savannah River, meanders along the riverbank to the Georgia Avenue Bridge and connects with the roundabout and sidewalk at Riverside Boulevard.

Greeneway Trail Funding
|
In addition to city funds, construction of the Greeneway has been funded by grants from the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, South Carolina Department of Transportation and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. The city has provided materials, equipment and labor.

Greeneway Trail Access
|
The Greeneway meanders throughout the city and many of its neighborhoods. The general public may access the Greeneway at three locations. The Greeneway is open from dawn to dusk and is regularly patrolled by the Department of Public Safety. Pets are permitted but must be on a leash at all times.
1. The western terminus is located at Pisgah Road just off Five Notch Road. Limited parking is available at this location.
2. Parking and Greeneway access is also located near the Greeneway's eastern terminus off of Riverside Boulevard opposite the entrance drive to the River Golf Club.
3. The Greeneway may also be accessed at its approximate midpoint at Riverview Park, 101 Riverview Park Drive. This part of the trail travels under the main entrance to the Riverview Park Activities Center. Adequate parking is available at Riverview Park.

Greeneway Trail User Etiquette
|
The increasing popularity of the Greeneway has resulted in recent complaints of certain Greeneway user practices that may be unsafe or inconsiderate. In response to these concerns, City Council recently adopted a resolution containing a comprehensive list of Rules and Regulations for Greeneway users. residents and visitors are encouraged to use common sense and courtesy so the that Greeneway can be safely shared and enjoyed by all.

- Be predictable
Travel in a consistent and predictable manner. Always look before changing positions on the trail.
- Be courteous
Announce your intentions before passing.
- Be respectful of other trail users regardless of their mode, speed or skill level.
If you stop, don't block the trail.
Allow those approaching room to proceed.
Pass on the left.
- Be respectful of private property
While the Greeneway is open to the public, much of the adjacent land is private property. Respect all property rights.
Practice Leave No Trace principles
- Be sensitive to area plant and wildlife
Stay on existing trails
Take out what you take in.
Keep pets on leashes and be prepared to clean up after them.
- Plan ahead
Know your equipment and carry gear for changing weather conditions.
